John Tory Praises Crombie’s Experience, Supports Mississauga Subway Extension

Crombie says she will ask former Toronto mayor to help lead the case for the subway with provincial and federal governments

MISSISSAUGA — Former Toronto mayor John Tory is praising Bonnie Crombie’s leadership and experience ahead of Monday’s election, while supporting her proposal to extend the subway to Mississauga City Centre.

In an interview with the Toronto Star, Tory spoke warmly about their record of working together as neighbouring mayors.

“My experience with Bonnie Crombie was very positive,” Tory told the Star. “She has the experience that we probably need, especially now in difficult, challenging times for cities and for the country.”

“I think that if she does as good a job as she did before, when I was working with her, that this would be a positive thing for the residents of Mississauga.”

Tory also supported Crombie’s proposal to extend the subway from Kipling Station to Square One, describing it as a good idea that would provide a needed seamless regional connection, according to the Star.

“John and I worked closely together as neighbouring mayors to attract investment, coordinate transit and build a stronger regional economy. His confidence in my experience and economic leadership means a great deal,” said Crombie. “He knows what it takes to lead a major city through difficult times. That is the experience I’m asking Mississauga voters to put to work — to restore fiscal discipline, attract investment and deliver the transit our city needs.”

Crombie said she would draw on Tory’s experience and relationships to advance the subway extension with the provincial and federal governments.

“I’m particularly encouraged by his support for extending the subway to Mississauga. If I’m elected, I’ll be counting on his advice and experience to help secure this project.”

Crombie’s first 100 days would include advancing a subway feasibility motion and beginning discussions with both senior levels of government.

“John has often said that if we had built just one kilometre of subway a year for the past 30 years, we would not face the transit deficit we do today. He’s right,” said Crombie. “He understands that our cities’ economies are connected and that getting people moving benefits the whole region. We cannot afford another generation of waiting. I’m ready to bring people together to get this built, and he will be a key part of that effort if I am given a mandate to lead Mississauga.”
